About Salt Lake Teens Write

The Salt Lake Teens Write (SLTW) program is a youth program of the SLCC Community Writing Center (CWC) in partnership with the Salt Lake City Public Library. We're proud to provide this series of writing workshops to support teens as they develop their skills and passion for creative writing. All teens entering grades 9-12 this fall are eligible to participate in this program. Participants in each group will meet for three weeks at the designated times for comprehensive workshops and publication processes. Additionally, participants will work together and separately to create amazing works of writing and engage in their creative passions.

The CWC is a community outreach program of the Salt Lake Community College. We have a number of exciting programs and services dedicated to helping you with your writing. Visit our website using the link below for more information and to discover more workshops, writing groups, and to learn about writing coaching.

Wanna get published?

At the end of each year, all the writing cohorts come together to collaborate on an anthology publication and public reading to celebrate the different texts they have created during the year. All Salt Lake Valley teens are eligible to submit regardless of registration status! (In other words, don't worry if you didn't have a chance to join a writing group throughout the year).

This year's submission deadline is 11:59 PM on November 17, 2022.
The reading gala will be held on the evening of December 16 at the SLCC Community Writing Center
to honor the artists whose works are selected for publication.

Stay tuned for updates on SLTW programming for 2023!

The information below offers brief overviews of each of the 2022 SL Teens Write cohorts:
Spring 2022 Cohort: Making it Personal

Online: March 8-25, 2022)

Spring Teens Write will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays this March. Since spring is the season of new beginnings and possibilities, it is also a season to reflect on the past in order to connect to the present and speculate on possible futures for ourselves. What better genre of creative writing to explore than Creative Nonfiction. Creative Nonfiction can take the form of memoirs (true stories about your memories and experiences), personal and lyric essays, and even comics.

  • Online every Tuesday for 60-90-minute workshops from 7-8:30 PM.
  • Online 30-minute coaching sessions (by email or video chat) for one-on-one feedback from the SLTW team every Thursday from 10am-8 PM.

Summer 2022 Cohort: Where in the World? Writing the Wire

(Held in person at the Community Writing Center: July 11 - August 1, 2022)

Summer vacation means FUN, right? This summer we'll be taking Creative Nonfiction up a notch by exploring the wonderful world of journalism! While we fix our gaze on journalistic writing, we will focus on harnessing our experiences into articles worthy of the presses. Even if nature happens to be right in our backyards or our travels take us just as far as grandmother's house, this world, big or small, has so much to offer.

Join us to mold your writing talents as you visit nature and travel "far and wide"! We'll have scavenger hunting, food from around the world, nature-walking, and more!
  • Mondays from 1-2:30 PM.         (There will be no meeting on July 25th).

Fall 2022 Cohort: Fiercely Fictional

(
Held in person at the Community Writing Center: October 4-27, 2022)

Let's explore this robust genre of speculative fiction! Whether you're a fan of stories about dragons and spell casters, dystopias and space travel, twisted mysteries, or anything in between, above, or beyond, we'll set about making the impossible (or at least very unlikely) into immersive stories with great characters, settings, and plot. We'll explore a lot of different sub-genres including magical realism, high and low fantasy, dystopia, steampunk, horror, and more.
Bring your imagination and a passion for the unexpected!

  • In-person every Tuesday for 60- to 90-minute workshops from 4-5 PM.
  • Online 30-minute coaching sessions (by email or video chat) for one-on-one feedback from the SLTW team every Thursday, 10am-8 PM.
