Setting
When, Where, and in What Culture(s) a Story Takes Place
The places we were born, live, and enjoy being in all influence us in many ways. The time period in which we were born and grow up in also influence us in many ways. The cultures that we were born into and grow up in influence us as well. Place + time + culture = setting in the stories we tell about ourselves and our world. The geographic, cultural, and “time” locations of your character’s/characters’ experiences, etc. Setting can also involve our emotional responses to place and time and culture. Places, time periods, and our cultural traditions can call up memories for us, as well as help us figure out and/or question our sense of belonging in the world we inhabit and share with others.
Think about how the place + time + culture of a fictional world or story influence the characters' choices, behaviors, and actions in the story. For example, think about how the setting of your favorite fictional story influences what happens to the characters in the story.
